Is Your Child Struggling With Handwriting? When Occupational Therapy in Mississauga Can Help

Handwriting can be challenging for many children, especially as schoolwork becomes more demanding. Some children may have messy handwriting, take longer than their peers to complete written work, complain that their hand hurts, or avoid writing altogether.

While handwriting difficulties are common, ongoing challenges can sometimes be related to underlying skills that make writing more difficult. Here at Asara Kids Health, pediatric occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech clinic in Mississauga, Ontario we take a look at the followinmg

Why Is Handwriting Difficult for Some Children?

Handwriting involves much more than simply holding a pencil. Children use a combination of fine motor skills, visual-motor skills, coordination, strength, attention, and motor planning every time they write.

Some signs your child may be having difficulty include:

  • Hand fatigue or pain when writing

  • Difficulty keeping up with written schoolwork

  • Very light or heavy pencil pressure

  • Inconsistent letter size or spacing

  • Difficulty writing on the line

  • Frequent letter or number reversals

  • An awkward or uncomfortable pencil grasp

  • Avoiding or becoming frustrated with writing tasks

  • Handwriting that becomes harder to read as they continue writing

How Can Occupational Therapy Help With Handwriting?

Our pediatric occupational therapist in Mississauga can look beyond the handwriting itself to understand what may be making writing difficult.

Depending on your child's needs, occupational therapy may address fine motor skills, hand strength and endurance, pencil control, visual-motor integration, letter formation, posture, writing speed, or strategies to reduce fatigue.

For older children, we may also explore accommodations such as typing, reduced written output, alternative paper, or other tools that make schoolwork more manageable.
